This is certainly what you would call an "eye-opener!" This is one of the most detailed, exciting, non-putter-downer books that I have ever had the privilege to read. And no, I am not just being biased because I have a thing for butt-kicking, tall, dark, sexy, virtually unbeatable men.... Or maybe I am....Shhh.....

So, when a person picks up a book and realizes that the book has to do with supernatural beings and giant men who kick Daemon butt, you expect it to be a thriller, yes, but you also seem to think, "Hey, this is going to be about teens." You expect it to be a Young Adult novel. Am I right or am I right? Normally, when it comes to books, I am. But, back to the review. This is a book about supernatural beings, yes, but it has none of that teen-romance theme that seems to be a big hit with teens nowadays. There is only so much we teens can take when it comes to supernatural creatures. No offense when it comes to vampires and werewolves, but every so often, a new creature would be interesting to read about. And Dawn of a Dark Knight gives readers that refreshment so many crave, be they teen or adult.

On the romance level, this book is similar to any other romance book that one might pick up. The guy does not want to be with the girl because he does not feel as though he is good enough, or because it's against the rules of a Higher Power. What makes this book different, though, is that it doesn't come from the naive perspective of a teenage girl who wants to be with the bad-boy vampire/werewolf. Instead, it is from the perspective of a woman who knows what she wants, and also from a guy who know what he wants. That is one theme that caught my eye and I enjoyed.

"Watch out," Kira shrieked as a four-door import pulled alongside the SUV. The driver targeted Ashor with a gun.

"Down," Ashor commanded. He dodged the firing muzzle and grabbed Kira forward to avoid the bullet's path. The bullet left clean holes in the side windows and a spiderweb of cracked glass.

"Persistent bastards," Ashor grumbled as he jammed the SUV into gear and rammed the car next to them before peeling away. Just as they hit the road, Ashor's new cell phone squealed in a high-pitched, synthetic, musical noise.

"You okay?" he asked, ignoring the phone. To clear his side view, Ashor thrust his elbow through the spiderweb of cracked safety glass. Glass cubes showered everywhere.

"Shit."

He wiped his body free of debris.

"I'm fine," she replied.

She whip-lashed into the seat as the SUV was rammed forward. Ashor tapped the brakes. The cars crashed together again, slamming them forward and then forcefully back in their seats.

"Can't you do a spell or something to protect this car or make his explode?" Kira asked.

"What? No."

"Aren't you a magnus, which implies magician or sorcerer? You guys are supposed to do magic spells."

"The spells were lost." His phone rang again.

"Lost? What kind of moronic organization loses the spells!"

Looking Back.... and Forward #7

I did it again didn't I? I completely forgot to post this for another set of weeks. I really apologize for that, but sometimes I can't control it when life gets in the way and prevents me from doing some of the things I'd like to do here.

I'm not giving up yet, though, so here's this week's installment, along with all of the books that I never got to in the last few weeks.

Emma spent her childhood creating imaginary worlds to compensate for a disappointingly average reality, so it was probably inevitable that she ended up writing fantasy and paranormal for young adults. She was born in Birmingham, UK, which she fled at the first opportunity to study English Literature at Lancaster University. In her three years at Lancaster, she hiked up mountains, skydived in Australia, and endured a traumatic episode involving a swarm of bees in the Costa Rican jungle. She also wrote various novels and short stories. These included her first publication, a rather bleak dystopian piece, and a disturbing story about a homicidal duck (which she hopes will never see the light of day).
